A few years ago, a local material handling customer was faced with the prospect that the PLC IO controlling their conveyors was becoming obsolete and replacement parts might not be available. In considering their options, IAC and Rockwell were able to help the customer determine that replacing the obsolete IO with network based control might be the best solution. The centerpiece of this solution is the Rockwell E300 electronic overload relay.

The E300 overload relay is a motor protection overload which can be programmed via Logix controller, a local operator display station or via a direct connection to a laptop. The E300 offers the ability to set multiple trip scenarios beyond simple motor overload (phase loss, low voltage, etc.) and offers a multitude of motor status information to on which to base decisions. Additionally the E300 offers local IO (either 24VDC or 120 VAC), dual Ethernet I/P ports for DLR connection and local control via DeviceLogix (local control strategy built into the E300) and a local operator station.

This customer operates on a periodic basis and usually has expensive, high utility equipment waiting at one or both ends of the conveying systems. On this basis, an unplanned motor shutdown can be costly. The customer is using information from the E300 overload such as the “Time to Trip” function (predictive of how long before an overloaded motor trips) to avoid being shutdown. Additionally this customer uses the added information in a predictive analysis fashion to govern preventive maintenance between conveying runs.
